Why did the Jaguars go from 11-5 to 5-11 this year. The answer is in
the following stats:
- The Jaguars were +9 in turnovers last year and -7 this year. That is a turnover margin change of
-16. Turnovers flip field position and take away scoring opportunites.
- While passing yards per game were nearly the same (208.2 to 208.0), rush yards per game went
from 149.4 to 110.9.
- Jaguar QBs were sacked 31 times last year compared to 42 this year, while the Jags Defense sacked
opposing QBs 37 times last year but only 29 times this year. Negative yard plays also flip field position and the Jaguars
went from +6 in sack margin to -13 a change in sack margin of -19.

Defensive Stat Facts
You might believe that the Jaguar defense regressed quite a bit this year, but the stats
don't necessarily bear that out.
- Yards given up per game went up by 17.1 ypg from 313.8 to 330.9.
- Passing yards per game went up slightly from 213.5 to 224.1.
- Rushing yards per game went up slightly from 100.3 to 106.8 which was 13th in the league.
But points scored by Jaguar opponents went up from 19.0 to 22.9, a drop
of 11 places from 10th to 21st. How does this happen considering the above stats. It is a drop in big defensive plays.
- Interceptions went down from 20 to 13.
- Sacks went down from 37 to 29.
- The Jaguars were 28th in the league in average starting position differential at -3.66. You
might think this is inconsequential but it is not. The bottom 5 teams in the league in this stat had a combined record of
24-56, with no team having a winning record. Conversely the 5 highest ranked teams for this statistic were a combined 53-27
with no team having a losing record. Considering that there are 13 possessions per game the field position differential is
47.5 yards which is nearly three times the increase in total yards given up by the defense.
